Hi guys! Welcome to my blog. Knowing a lot of words is the single most important step in becoming a good English user. In the past, we have learned some workplace expressions, shopping vocabulary, angry phrasal verbs and even a trick to remember new words. Today, we are going to talk about a very popular and modern topic that I’m sure all of you will be thrilled to know. We are giving you 12 Internet words that you are going to see regularly in the cyber (computerized) world. Let’s get started!

1. Viral (adjective): If something is viral, it’s everywhere and everyone has seen it. An image, a video or even a word can be viral.

Example 1: This advertisement is so viral. I’ve literally seen it 100 times today.

Example 2: This book will teach you how to make your video go viral.

Tip 1: We usually use the verb “go” with the adjective “viral” as see in example 2. If something goes viral, it spreads extremely fast and widely.

Tip 2: Viral is actually the adjective of the word virus. As you know, viruses can spread very fast in a population if they are not controlled.

 

2. Google (verb): to search for something using the Google’s search engine. Sometimes, even when you do not use Google to search for something, you can still use the verb “google”

Example 1: I’m not gonna explain it to you. Just google it.

Example 2: Googling has replaced traditional dictionaries as the most popular platform to look for the definition of a word.

Tip: Google is not the first brand name that becomes an English word. For examples, you may hear people say that they are going to play Frisbee. Frisbee is the name of a brand that makes round plastic disks that you can play throw and catch with. Since they are the most popular brand in this industry, every plastic throwing disk is now a Frisbee.

 

3. Post (noun): something (written or graphic) that you put on the internet.

Post (verb): to put something (written or graphic) on the internet.

Example 1: Have you liked my latest post? It’s really funny.

Example 2: She just posted this image three hours ago but it has already gone viral.

 

4. Blog (noun): is the short form for web log. A log is a journal or diary of some sort where you keep written record of events, opinions and emotions that you have.

Vlog (noun):  is a video log. Instead of a piece of writing, some people post a video of themselves, talking and discussing certain issues. A very famous vlogger – a person who makes vlogs – is Nigahiha.

Example 1: I follow this blog because the writer is very knowledgeable about dating.

Example 2: Have you seen his latest vlog? It’s hilarious man!

Tip: A blogger is someone who writes a blog and a vlogger is someone who makes vlogs.

 

5. Tweet (noun/verb): a short message that you share with people who follow you on Twitter, which they can retweet so that people who follow them can see, etc.

Example 1: His latest tweet revealed the reason why he broke up with his wife.

Example 2: Miley Cyrus just tweeted some weird photos again.

Tip: The verb tweet originally means to make a chirping sound as a bird. Tweeter’s icon is actually a bird. The company took the idea of real birds tweeting after hearing another bird’s tweet to spread news of an incoming predator.

 

6. Phising (noun/verb): is a cybercrime (a crime committed online) in which a person tricks his victims into voluntarily giving up their personal security information. For example, you may receive an email stating that there is a problem with your credit card and you need to resend your account number and security code to this email address so that the problem can be fixed. However, there is no actual problem. The criminal tricks you into sending him your personal information so he can use your credit card for his own purposes.

Example 1: Phising is really hard to prevent because most of the times, victims voluntarily let the criminal in.

Example 2: A 14-year-old kid just got arrested by the police for phising.

Tip: The term phising actually comes from the common verb to fish. Similar to real life fishing, a criminal throws bait and hopes that someone will bite.

 

7. Bits/Bytes (noun): One bit is a very small piece of information used in computer programing. A bit can either be 0 or 1 and everything that you see on your computer and on the internet is made entirely of bits – just endless series of 0 and 1. A byte is a collection of 8 bits.

Example: This text file exceeds the limit of 1 million bits.

Tip: You normally don’t see the words bit and byte by themselves. Instead you are going to see kilobit (about 1000 bits) or kilobytes (about 1000 byte). Kilo is a prefix for 1000, mega is for 1,000,000 and Giga is for 1,000,000,000. Nowadays, some computers can have up to a few Terabytes, which is about 1,000,000,000,000 byte

Meme (noun): is an idea or an image that many people recognized and they copy and reuse it for other purposes. A very common meme on the internet is the photo of “the most interesting guy in the world” who doesn’t “always do something” but when he does, it’s something interesting. You can see this meme above.

Example 1: There are people who make money by creating funny memes which go viral.

Example 2: The doge is literally one of the most boring memes on the internet.

Tip: The word meme has its root in Biology. It means a piece of information that undergoes the evolutionary process of the human’s brain: copy, spread, mutate and evolve.

 

9. URL (noun): is the address of a web page on the internet.

Domain (noun): is basically a collection of URLs, making up a website.

Example 1: An URL is something like http://www.englishchat247.com/how-to-speak-english-fast/

Example 2: A domain is something like englishchat247.com 

 

10. Views (noun): the number of times that this video, image or post has been seen by people. If 10 people have watched your video, it will have 10 views.

Example 1: Some people think that the more views you have, the better you are as a person.

Example 2: I actually went to a class to learn how to increase the views for my videos.

 

11. Spam (noun): is a junk or garbage email which contains no useful information. In fact, they may actually contain viruses or they are used as a phising device to get your information. Nobody wants spam, that’s why most of today’s modern email services have used ways to filter them.

Example 1: An average person receives over 15 spams a day.

Example 2: My mother’s facebook account gets hacked again. She has been posting spams the whole day.

Tip: the word SPAM actually comes from the name of a food company who makes canned meat. Because no one knows what kind of thing is in a can so people start to use this term for email of unknown origin and malicious intent.

 

12. Cookies (noun): Not the delicious, crunchy and edible type of cookies! Cookies is a computer term for your personal information collected by certain websites so that they can customize or personalize their websites for your own usage. For example, if you often visit Amazon to look for English textbooks, the next time you go there, the website will give you some relevant suggestions, such as an English-listening CD box.

Example 1: Deleting your cookies once in a while helps to improve the speed of browsing internet.

Example 2: Although cookies help you to have a more personalized web experience, be careful of exposing too much information about yourself online.
